| Jammu celebrates Baisakhi amid security | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 13- The festival of Baisakhi was celebrated with gaiety and exuberance amid tight security arrangements in the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir today. People from all walks of life especially from remote villages thronged Baisakhi fair (mela) organized every year at the banks of Ranbir Canal. Colourfully dressed children purchased toys and enjoyed horse rides and eatables. As the festival has tremendous importance in Sikh religion, major activities of the day were organized in Gurdwaras, where many people paid a visit and took part in the special prayers. For farming community, Baisakhi marks the New Year as it is time to harvest Rabi crop. The farmers, however, thank God for the bountiful crop and pray for good times ahead while people buy new clothes and make merry by singing, dancing and enjoying the best of festive food. A special program of dance and songs ‘Jatta aai Baisakhi’, was organized late in the evening wherein men and women break into the bhangra and gidda to express their joy, Ramesh Malhotra, organizer of the program said. Tight security arrangements were also made during the fair and in the entire city to avoid any untoward incident. The City of Temples this time missed annual week-long Baisakhi Festival due to the scheduled Parliamentary election in which Jammu-Poonch constituency would go to poll on April 16.
