SKUAST-J organizes training on Biochar for sustainable agriculture

JAMMU, Mar 5: Under the guidance of Honourable Vice Chancellor, Dr. B.N. Tripathi, SKUAST Jammu organized a two-day training program on "Biochar as an Innovative Solution for Waste Management in Agriculture" on 4th and 5th, March 2025, for the officials and extension workers of the Department of Agriculture, Government of Union Territory, Jammu & Kashmir. This initiative aimed to equip officials and extension workers with the knowledge and skills necessary to utilize biochar as a sustainable approach to agricultural waste management and soil enhancement. Speaking at the event, Dr. S.K. Gupta, Director Research, emphasized the significance of sustainable agricultural practices in addressing waste management challenges and promoting climate-resilient farming. "Biochar presents an opportunity to transform agricultural waste into a valuable resource, improving soil health while contributing to environmental conservation," he stated. The training program focused on the role of biochar in improving soil fertility, reducing dependency on chemical fertilizers, enhancing carbon sequestration, and mitigating environmental pollution. Recognizing the increasing significance of biochar in agriculture, the training sought to equip participants with the latest technical expertise in this field and encompassed an array of pertinent topics including soil health and carbon management, biochar: sustainable solution for waste-to-resource technologies, role of biochar in improving soil properties, effect of biochar on crop performance and yield. The expert lectures were delivered on biochar production, its applications in agriculture, and its impact on soil health and crop productivity were delivered by Dr. Vikas Abrol, Dr Peeyush Sharma, Dr. Vikas Sharma. During the program, participants were engaged in interactive sessions to understand the practical aspects of biochar integration into farming systems. Prof. Vikas Abrol, coordinator of the training presented the vote of thanks and participants expressed their appreciation for the comprehensive content and topics covered in the training
