The tourism landscape in Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a remarkable shift over the past four years, with Jammu consistently attracting more tourists than Kashmir. This trend, as highlighted in the Economic Survey 2024-25, underscores Jammu’s immense tourism potential, which, if fully explored, can transform the region into one of the country’s most sought-after travel destinations. According to the Economic Survey tabled in the Legislative Assembly, Jammu received 1,06,50,757 tourists in 2021, far surpassing Kashmir’s 6,65,777 visitors. The following year, the gap widened, with Jammu recording a staggering 1,62,10,875 tourist arrivals, compared to Kashmir’s 26,73,442. In 2023, Jammu’s tourism numbers soared to 1,80,24,176, while Kashmir attracted 31,55,835 visitors. The trend continued in 2024, with Jammu welcoming 2,00,91,379 tourists, whereas Kashmir registered 34,98,702 arrivals. These statistics present a compelling case for bolstering Jammu’s tourism sector to harness its full potential. Jammu’s consistent tourism dominance can be attributed to several factors. Foremost among them is the presence of the revered Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Katra, which alone draws millions of pilgrims annually. The religious tourism sector has significantly contributed to Jammu’s growing footfall, reinforcing the region’s appeal as a spiritual hub. Additionally, other sacred sites like Raghunath Temple, Bawe Wali Mata, Ranbireshwar Temple, and Shiv Khori further enhance Jammu’s attractiveness for pilgrims. However, beyond religious tourism, Jammu boasts a diverse array of attractions that remain largely untapped. The picturesque Patnitop, Sanasar, Mansar Lake, Surinsar Lake, and Bhaderwah offer breathtaking landscapes and adventure opportunities that can rival some of the most popular hill stations in the country. The region’s rich history, reflected in the Mubarak Mandi Palace, Bahu Fort, and Akhnoor Fort, provides cultural and heritage tourism prospects that deserve greater attention. A well-strategized campaign promoting Jammu’s scenic beauty, adventure tourism, and heritage sites can elevate the region’s status among domestic and international travellers. Infrastructure development can play a crucial role in realizing Jammu’s tourism potential. Improved road connectivity, expanded railway networks, and the enhancement of Jammu Airport into an international terminal can significantly boost visitor numbers. Moreover, better accommodation facilities, eco-tourism initiatives, and adventure sports development can attract a diverse range of tourists beyond pilgrims. Jammu’s recent tourism boom is not just a statistical phenomenon but a testament to its growing appeal. With strategic investment, robust marketing, and sustainable development, Jammu has the potential to emerge as a premier travel destination in the country. It is time to recognize and capitalize on this hidden gem, ensuring that Jammu receives its rightful place on the national and global tourism map. |
