Early Times Report
Jammu , April 14: Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday announced that the return of peace in Jammu and Kashmir was ensured during the five year rule of the United Progressive Alliance, UPA led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He said that Congress does not believe in communalizing the situation and asked voters not to vote for those who seek votes on communal lines.
Addressing a rally at Vijaypur in Jammu Rahul Gandhi said that Congress believes in uniting the country and not dividing it in the name of religion.
Rahul described the rural job guarantee scheme as the hallmark of UPA's pro-poor programmes. “Our party has delivered what it promised to the masses,” Rahul said.
"During the five years of the UPA government, major promises have been fulfilled and the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) is the biggest success," Gandhi said, describing the NREGA as the biggest employment scheme in the world, he said the programme had been given legal backing to ensure its success.
Gandhi said that during the UPA rule, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi fought for the poor and backward sections of the society. He said that the return of peace in the state was made possible because of the untiring effort of the Congress party.

The Congress leader said that his party was committed to the cause of the deprived sections and farmers and pointed out that the UPA government has launched a loan waiver scheme to the tune of Rs 70,000 crore to bail out the agricultural workers.
While listing out the number of schemes initiated by the UPA government for the welfare of the masses, Gandhi attacked the previous NDA government by accusing it of not taking care of the poor and downtrodden. Rahul Gandhi ridiculed the opposition remarks that the UPA was soft on terrorism.
“I have a question for all these parties,” Gandhi said referring to the rigorous campaign of the BJP accusing the government of having no will and capacity to fight terrorism.
“If Manmohan Singh was not fighting terrorism, then how did the situation in Jammu and Kashmir transform from a land of death and destruction to peace and progress,” he said.
Interestingly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also addressed the joint Congress and National Conference rally.
Omar Abdullah while addressing the rally said that Jammu and Kashmir’s progress was guaranteed if the UPA returns to power.
Meanwhile, security was tightened here ahead of AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi's visit to address election rallies on the last day of campaigning on Tuesday for the Jammu-Poonch constituency, which goes to polls on April 16.
The election rallies venue in Vijaypur in Samba district and the Kathua region, were placed under tight security cover with additional deployment of police and para-military force, police sources told .
A team of special protection group (SPG) had arrived here two days back to conduct a survey of the venues.
After addressing the rallies in Jammu Rahul Gandhi left for Punjab and then to New Delhi in the evening.
