Ambedkar envisioned ‘just society’: Expert
4/15/2009 10:49:12 PM

Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 15- Dr. Ambedkar Studies Centre, University of Jammu organized 3rd Dr. Ambedkar Memorial lecture on ‘Dr. Ambedkar as a Sociologist: Beyond Reductionism’ in the University campus here today.
Prof. P.G. Jogdand a distinguished scholar from Department of Sociology, University of Mumbai, who is author of Dalit Movement in Maharashtra, New Economic Policy and Dalits, Globalization and Social Movements Struggle for a Humane Society delivered the lecture. He has been the active member of professional academic bodies in India and abroad. His research interests are – Subaltern perspective especially Dalit movement, Empowerment of Dalits, New Economic policy and Dalits etc. Scores of people including distinguished teaching fraternity, civil society and scholars attended the discussion.
Floral tributes were paid to Dr Ambedkar by the distinguished gathering followed by lecture. In his lecture, Prof. Jogdand emphasized that Dr Ambedkar was not only an armchair academics or sociologist, but he was a leader and social reformer whose primary concern was to liberate Dalits from shackles of social oppression and translate his philosophy into action so as to build a new social order. For that ‘Annihilation of Caste’ was his target. He added that Ambedkar has not only analyzed caste but also offered solution for eradicating the caste system. Thus he developed his anti-caste discourse. Ambedkar’s position on the caste system was essentially confrontationist and not reconciliatory. Thus, his ‘anti- caste discourse’ contributed meaningfully to the politics of emancipation for the Dalits.
He also shared how Ambedkar as a Sociologist analyzed the caste system in a convincing manner. In 1920s he rejected the logic of ‘Sanskritisation’ – which M N Srinivas introduced forty years later. Basically his main project was to create ‘Just Society’ on the principles of Equality, Liberty, Fraternity and Social Justice. He wanted to bring about structural changes and not merely positional changes. Finally Prof. Jogdand stressed that it is sad that the so called educated and even academics of the country still do not want to consider Dr Ambedkar as Sociologists and label him as Dalito ka Neta or Savidhan ke Nirmata. He thinks this is the politics of non-recognition and putting him on the periphery or margin. There is a lot of misunderstanding about Ambedkar in the mind of the people which we have to remove at the earliest.
Prof. BPS Seghal, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu presided over the function while Prof. S.R.Khan, Dean of Behavioural Sciences was the “Guest of honour” for the event. Dr. Ashish Saxena, Director incharge, Dr. Ambedkar Centre welcomed the guests and spoke about the day and also functioning of the centre. The event was managed by Varsha Kapoor while Dr. Sapna presented Vote of Thanks.
