Governor unveils statue of Hari Singh
Maharaja was a great patriot, social reformer: Governor

JAMMU, SEPTEMBER 23- Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd) S K Sinha today said that Maharaja Hari Singh pioneered the state subject laws in Jammu and Kashmir, giving it a special identity, as a result of which the State enjoys a distinct position as proud part of India.
‘This did not happen in our neighbourhood (PoK)’, the Governor said at a function after unveiling the statue of the Maharaja in Delhi Public School campus here this morning.
Paying tributes to the Maharaja on his 112th birth anniversary today, the Governor described him as a great patriot who despite being an allay of British strongly pleaded at the Round Table Conference in London in 1931 for according due place and status to the motherland, India, in Commonwealth. That was the period when freedom struggle had taken the shape of a mass movement and some of Maharajas did not joint it. He also lauded the role of Maharaja in undertaking social reforms and introducing democracy in the State by forming Praja Sabha.
General Sinha referred to his three meetings with Maharaja during his tenure as a Major and staff officer of General K M Kariapa in 1947 and 1948 and said that despite being disillusioned and dejected, he conducted himself in a dignified manner. The Maharaja had also visited the Army in Jammu.
‘It is a great moment for me to unveil the statue of the Maharaja for which I came straightway from Mata Vaishno Devi Bhavan, after offering prayers at the onset of Navratras’, the Governor said and greeted the people on Navratras.
The Governor presented Maharaja Hari Singh awards to Honrary Cap. Sunder Singh for his valour as an Army officer, Mr Manu Srivastav for his commendable work in 1989-90 as a journalist, Mrs T Angmo for promoting culture, Choudhry Abdul Rasheed in the field of education and Mr Mithun Manhas for being an upcoming cricketer.
He also released a book on the Maharaja, written by Mr Som Nath Wukhloo.
Prominent among those present on the occasion were Minister for Roads and Buildings, Thakur Gulchain Singh Charak, Vice Chancellor, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Professor N K Bansal, former minister, Mr Ajatshatru Singh and a host of dignitaries, prominent citizens, academicians, staff and students of the school.
The function started with lighting of ceremonial lamp by the Governor. It was marked by Homage to the Maharaja by the school children, a poem by Praduman Singh and homage by Prof Archana Kaiser, Prof Subash Sharma, Gen (Retd) B S Jaswal, Prof Zahoor-ud-Din, Mr Ram Sahai and Prof Devinder Singh.
On the occasion, Mr Ajatshatru Singh was presented a Sword of Honour.
