The National Health Mission (NHM) has been a cornerstone of the country’s public health system, playing an indispensable role in strengthening healthcare delivery across states and union territories, including Jammu and Kashmir.
With a special focus on improving maternal and child health, disease control programs, and healthcare accessibility, NHM has emerged as a lifeline for millions. The employees of NHM, despite being contractual workers, have been at the forefront of this mission, demonstrating unparalleled dedication in ensuring effective healthcare services reach every corner of Jammu and Kashmir.
J&K’s unique geographical and socio-political challenges make healthcare delivery a complex task. The region comprises difficult terrains, scattered populations, and harsh weather conditions, which often make access to quality healthcare a challenge.
NHM employees, including doctors, nurses, paramedics, ASHA workers, and administrative staff, have played a crucial role in bridging this gap. They work tirelessly in urban and remote rural areas, ensuring that essential medical services reach the people who need them the most.
A significant contribution of NHM employees has been in maternal and child healthcare. Various programs under NHM have been instrumental in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates in Jammu and Kashmir. Efforts of frontline health workers, particularly ASHA workers, have been commendable. Another vital area where NHM employees have made a difference is in disease control and prevention. They have been instrumental in implementing immunization drives, controlling communicable diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, and dengue, and running awareness campaigns about sanitation and hygiene.
Despite their significant contributions, NHM employees face numerous challenges. Being contractual workers, they lack job security, financial stability, and other employment benefits enjoyed by their counterparts in permanent government jobs.
Their contracts are renewed annually based on performance, adding an element of uncertainty to their service. Many NHM employees have been demanding regularization of their services, considering their indispensable role in the healthcare system.
The government must acknowledge their contribution and consider policy measures that ensure job security, better remuneration, and career growth opportunities for them.
The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, which oversees NHM policies, should recognize the importance of retaining experienced NHM staff by introducing a structured framework for their employment. Investing in the welfare of NHM employees will ultimately strengthen the healthcare system in Jammu and Kashmir and improve public health outcomes.
The dedication and service of NHM employees in Jammu and Kashmir deserve appreciation and institutional support. They are the backbone of healthcare delivery in the region, and ensuring their well-being is not just a necessity but a moral obligation. Their tireless efforts continue to make a profound impact on the lives of the people, and it is high time their contributions are acknowledged with policies that secure their future and sustain the progress they have achieved in public health.
