NEW DELHI, April 16: Dr Manmohan Singh’s pictures and portraits have been removed not only from the official domains of Press Information Bureau (PIB) but also from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) as Election Commission of India has struck on the country’s topmost office with its Model Copde of Conduct (MCC), which would remain in force till completion of the current Lok Sabha elections in third week of May.

ECI has advised the authorities in writing that PM's photographs on the PIB websites as also in the PMO be removed in view of the general elections in the country.

The EC's advise given recently came in response to a clarification sought by the PIB in this regard, sources said.

"It (display of photographs) may not be done till the Model Code of Conduct is in force," the EC told the PIB which asked whether the Prime Minister's photographs on attending official functions could be put on the website.

The EC also said that the Prime Minister's messages on special occasions like Good Friday and Mahavir Jayanti be restricted only to good wishes for the occasion.

The Commission had earlier advised Ministers to avoid holding press conferences and instead issue press releases in view of the polls.

"Now that the Model Code of Conduct is in force throughout India in view of the current general elections to the Lok Sabha and the Legislative Assemblies of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Sikkim, the Commission would like to advise that such press conferences should be avoided, as far as possible," the EC had said in a letter to the Cabinet Secretary.
