NISD & SCJS organize awareness program

Jammu, Mar 30: The National Institute of Social Defense (NISD) and the Senior Citizens Joy Society (SCJS) organized an awareness program on the Rights of Senior Citizens at Panch Mandir, Chhanni Himmat.
Advocate Deepali Sharma, J&K High Court, was the Chief Guest, while Dr. Shreyansh Kumar Jain, State Yoga Commissioner and Chairman/Advisor of SCJS, presided over the event. Mrs. Swati Basotra, a renowned motivational speaker, was the Special Invitee.
The program began with a welcome address by Sh. Ashok Gupta, President of SCJS, who emphasized the need for raising awareness about senior citizens’ rights.
Dr. Jain elaborated on the rights of senior citizens at both physical and mental levels:
Physical Rights:
• Access to free or subsidized healthcare in government hospitals.
• Priority medical treatment.
• Benefits under health schemes like Ayushman Bharat.
• Protection against neglect and abuse.
Mental and Emotional Rights:
• Right to dignity and respect from family and society.
• Protection from verbal, emotional, and psychological abuse.
• Safeguards against forceful eviction or emotional alienation.
Advocate Deepali Sharma Explains Legal Rights
Advocate Deepali Sharma detailed the legal protections available to senior citizens:
• Right to Maintenance: The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 mandates financial support from children and heirs.
• Right to Property: Protection from illegal transfer or usurpation of property, with provisions to reclaim assets if children fail to maintain the parents.
• Right to File a Complaint: Senior citizens can seek redressal through maintenance tribunals.
• Right to Legal Aid: Free legal assistance is available under government schemes.
Mrs. Swati Basotra spoke on the emotional and social responsibilities of senior citizens, emphasizing their role in fostering family unity, promoting moral values, and mentoring the younger generation. She highlighted the importance of emotional support within families and society.
The event was conducted by Mr. Ashok Khajuria, Secretary of SCJS, while Mr. H.C. Vaid, Member of the Executive Body, delivered the vote of thanks.
