| Archaeological Survey of India to celebrate world Heritage day | | | Early Times Report Jammu, April 17 The Archaeological Survey of India is celebrating the World Heritage Day on 18th April every year at Centrally Protected Monuments located in Jammu and Kashmir region. This year the celebration is scheduled to be held at Pari Mahal, Srinagar. It was suggested during a symposium organized by International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICSMOS), Tunisia and 1982 that a day be celebrated to celebrate the diversity of heritage throughout the world. From this idea, the International Day for Monuments and sites was born. On this proposal of ICOMOS, 18th April was endorsed as International Day for Monuments and Sites by United Nation Educational, Social and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1983. Theme for the International Day for Monuments and Sites 2009- is “Heritage and Science”. The main objective of the World Heritage Day is to involve the youth of the area through local school and college students in protection, preservation and propagation of our great heritage for which our country is justly world famous. A Photo-exhibition and other cultural awareness programme on the eve of the World Heritage Day will be organized at the premises of Centrally Protected Monument at Pari Mahal, Srinagar highlighting the recent Archaeological activities in the Jammu and Kashmir state, which includes conservation of monuments, explorations and excavations in addition to the monuments inscribed in the World Heritage list shall be on display. On the occasion Jenab Prof. Riyaz Punjabi, Vice Chancellor, Kashmir University Srinagar has kindly consented to be the Chief Guest and will inaugurate the Phto-exhibition on recent archaeological activities in Jammu and Kashmir. Prof. Jenab Ishq Khan, Head (Retd) Department of History Kashmir University, Srinagar has kindly consented to deliver key note address on History and Heriage, Jenab Prof. Fida Hussain, Director (Retd), Department of Archive and Museums, Government of Jammu and Kashmir has kindly consented to preside over the function. Jenab Shri Parwez Samuel Koul, Principal, Bisco and Malinson Higher Secondary School, Srinagar will be the guest of honour. Two brouchers on the Centrally Protected Monuments/ Sites on Kashmir region and Ladakh region will be released by the invited guests during the inaugural ceremony.
