Sanjay Aggarwal, Chairperson, Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations Jammu said that in financial year 2025 J&K witnessed a minor growth of 3.74% in automobile retail as compared to last financial year. Tractor retail increased by 27.31 % and 2Wheeler by 10.20% whereas Commercial Vehicle, Passenger Vehicle and 3 Wheeler showed a degrowth of 9.97%, 2.89 and 0.29 respectively.
He said that March 2025 when compared with March 2024, witnessed a growth of 8.27% for Passenger vehicles, but Commercial Vehicle and 3 Wheeler category witnessed a degrowth of 12.53 % and 17.80 % respectively.
Aggarwal said that, the first three weeks of March were notably weak, but sales accelerated significantly in the last week, driven by positive triggers such as Navratri, Eid, and year-end purchasing influenced by depreciation benefits. In PV, the segment benefited from discounting, forthcoming price hikes, and festive buying. New model launches and better variant availability also aided growth.
Aggarwal said that, as April dawns, auto dealers across J&K brace for an uncertain month shaped by both domestic and global factors. IMD's warning of intense heat waves looms over consumer footfall and infrastructure activity, while renewed tariff tensions on the international stage add market volatility and rattle buyer sentiment. Despite these headwinds, nearly half of surveyed dealers still expect April sales to be flat and over a third foresee some growth-driven partly by regional festivals and the marriage season.
Aggarwal shared that, adding to the uncertainty is the looming spectre of a global tariff war, which could spark stock market turbulence and erode returns on mutual fund SIPs. If investors see their disposable incomes shrink in tandem with market volatility, discretionary spending-like auto purchases-may well suffer.
