KVK Reasi promotes Organic Lettuce Farming

REASI, Apr 7: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) is promoting the organic lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) farming in Reasi distt. of J&K. KVK Reasi is providing the technical know-how on the scientific cultivation of organic lettuce to the farmers.KVK Reasi is working under the dynamic leadership of Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Prof.B.N.Tripathi and able guidance of Director Extension, Prof.Amrish Vaid of SKUAST-J. Chief Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal said that KVK Reasi is endeavoring to enhance the income and employment of the farmers of the area by the introduction of new ventures in the district.
He informed that lettuce is an important salad crops and has multiple health benefits. He said that lettuce is a very good source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. He added that intake of lettuce lowers the cholesterol levels and protects neuronal cells of the body. He informed that the regular inclusion of lettuce in salads is known to prevent osteoporosis, iron-deficiency anemia, cardiovascular diseases, age-related macular disease in the elderly people, cancers and Alzheimer's disease. He narrated that Lettuce has low calorie content and zero fat. He further informed that it is a good source of chlorophyll and Vitamins A, B1, B2, C and K, folic acid and manganese. He narrated that there is huge scope of lettuce in Reasi disstt. as the distt. is visited by lakhs of pilgrims and there are number of hotels/restaurants at Katra. KVK is stressing on organic lettuce cultivation and upgrading the knowledge of the farmers for the preparation of organic formulations so that they can utilize them for their crop production. He added that organic lettuce has more quality and farmers can fetch more money by growing it. He said that quality organic lettuce can also be grown in green house, poly house or hydroponically. He said that KVK is guiding on the nutritional and packaging practices in lettuce crop for more profits. He added that KVK is providing the technical knowhow on increasing the shelf life of lettuce and suggesting the packaging techniques for more profits to the farmers. He said that this crop can be grown easily and has the marketing potential.
