Forts an important part of cultural history, heritage: Kotwal

Jammu Apr18- Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Dr. Pawan Kotwal today inaugurated an exhibition on Forts of Jammu and Kashmir on the eve of World Heritage Day at Kala Kendra.
This week long exhibition organized by the Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums will showcase about 65 photographs of various forts drawn from all the regions of the state. This exhibition has been organized to sensitize the young generation about the rich heritage and architecture of our state and the need for protection of these monuments.
Director Archives informed that this exhibition is an outcome of a survey and documentation project for monuments being undertaken by the department throughout the state. He also apprised Dr. Kotwal about the conservation works undertaken by the department in Bahu Fort (Jammu), Chingus Sarai (Rajouri), Hari Parvat (Srinagar) and Jasrota Fort (Kathua).
Dr. Kotwal appreciating the initiatives of the department in organizing the event said that forts represent an important part of any culture’s history and heritage and their conservation is significant for the new generation can appreciate and value this legacy. He said that today we have the facilities to protect our monuments and every possible step should be taken for their upkeep. He impressed the need to preserve and restore the pristine glory of these monuments for projecting their magnificent architecture and aesthetic beauty adding that in J&K forts are either hill-forts or surrounded by dense forests which make them even more attractive for the tourists.
Dr. Kotwal added that tourism potential of these forts needs to be harnessed and at the same time it is important to maintain the quality of restoration work through expert consultations and proper planning.
The inaugural function was attended by Director Tourism, officers from Archives and Tourism Department, luminaries from the field of art, culture and musicology and students from various schools who evinced great interest in the subject.
With an aim to highlight the importance of conservation of heritage sites in Kashmir, Women Collage organized a photo-exhibition on the eve of World Heritage Day.
Reports said that there are 65 heritage sites in the valley that come under the Archaeological Department.
NSS Coordinator University of Kashmir, Prof Iqbal Ahmad Hakim urged upon state government to form a committee that will look after the heritage site in the valley.
Chief quest of the occasion, Prof Riyaz Punjabi, vice-chancellor Kashmir University in his address stressed need for preserving the heritage sites.
“Apart from cultural and tourism value, the sites are important vis-à-vis links with the past,” he said, adding, “We request to government on behalf of academic community that al those artifacts which were shifted to Jammu from Valley be brought back.”
The organizers said that the main objective of the World Heritage Day was to involve the youth in protection, preservation and propagation of great heritage.
On the occasion the photos including that of Dogra rule in Kashmir, Bridges of Kashmir, traders of Kashmir, Shahi Hamdan mosque, children and women of Kashmir were displayed
