Jammu to host District Sport Climbing Championship on April 26

JAMMU, Apr 15: The Mountaineering Association of J&K is set to kick off its annual District Sport Climbing Competitions with the 24th Jammu District Sport Climbing Championship scheduled to be held on April 26, 2025, at Sprawling Buds ICSE School, Bantalab, Jammu. The prestigious event is being organized by the District Sport Climbing Association, Jammu, under the aegis of the Mountaineering Association of J&K.
The championship marks the beginning of a series of district-level climbing competitions, with the Udhampur and Reasi District Championships to follow on April 27, 2025.
Over 300 climbers from various institutions of Jammu district are expected to participate in the event, which could extend into the following day if all categories are not completed on the first day. The competitions will take place on the 40 ft high prefabricated Tenzing Norgay Sport Climbing Wall installed at the school campus.
The event will feature competitions across eight categories:
Men and Women (born in 2008 or earlier)
Boys and Girls (born in 2009, 2010, 2011)
Sub-Junior Boys and Girls (born in 2012 and 2013)
Mini Boys and Girls (born in 2014 and after)
All competitions will be conducted in the lead climbing format. Additionally, there will be special demonstrations in speed climbing by international climbers during the inaugural ceremony.
Interested climbers and institutions are advised to register by contacting Ms. Shawetica Khajuria, General Secretary of the Mountaineering Association of J&K, at 7006099855 by April 23, 2025. There will also be on-the-spot registration for a limited number of participants at the venue from 8:00 AM to 8:30 AM on the day of the event.
Ms. Shawetica Khajuria, who is also an international judge in sport climbing, will serve as the President of the Jury, while Mr. Sonam Sidharth, General Secretary of District Mountaineering Association, Jammu, will act as the Organising Secretary.
The organizing committee includes senior climbers and sport climbing enthusiasts such as Shilpa Charak, Navneet Gupta, Sushil Singh, Shashi Kant Sharma, Sourav Deep Singh, Sunil Chakharia, Prerna Charak, Vikas Singh, and Ulfat Khan.
The championship is being sponsored by the J&K Sports Council, with technical and logistical support provided by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation North Zone Committee, New Delhi.
The event promises to showcase the growing talent in sport climbing across Jammu and Kashmir and will provide a platform for budding athletes to shine on a larger stage.
