‘1952, 75, 86 accords were disastrous for JK’

GOOL, Apr 18: Ridiculing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s claim to strengthen the third generation friendship between Gandhi and Abdullah families, president of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mahbooba Mufti on Saturday said that such “opportunist alliances” always proved disastrous for people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing a public meeting at Gool in support of party candidate Thakur Balbir Singh, the PDP president said, “The fate of the present opportunist alliance no way would be different from the previous accords between two parties.”
Referring to 1952 Nehru-Sheikh accord, she said that with in a year after the accord Sheikh Abdullah was put behind the bars “even when he had eroded the authority and power of the state while signing that agreement for lust of power.”
Mahbooba said that NC leadership has always “bartered” wishes and aspirations of the people of the State to remain in power.
“What happened to the Indira-Sheikh accord of 1975 when Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah had meekly surrendered before New Delhi to enjoy the power,” she said, adding that Abdullah had accepted almost all conditions of New Delhi to become the Chief Minister.
“It is known fact that 1986 Farooq-Rajiv Accord was the biggest historical blunder in the history of Jammu and Kashmir,” she said.
“Had NC-Congress not rigged the elections in 1987, situation would have been entirely different in Jammu and Kashmir”, she added.
“NC leadership even did not hesitate to enter into alliance with BJP,” she said.
Mahbooba said that it was NC leadership that has “brazenly eroded” special status and autonomy of the State.
“How a weak and helpless NC leadership can take up the issue of greater autonomy in the Parliament. Even in 1999 when NC had 60 MLAs and five MPs including a Minister in the Union Minister in its kitty, the party failed to take a stand on the issue. The then NDA Government in which NC was also a part had thrown the autonomy resolution the dustbin but despite humiliation, the party (NC) remained in the coalition just to enjoy the power,” Mahbooba said.
