Poll preparedness arrangements reviewed

Udhampur, Apr19- To take a review of the poll preparedness on various aspects of Lok Sabha election-2009 to be held in district Udhampur on April 23, the District Election Officer, Ajay Khajuria today convened a meeting of Assistant Returning Officers and other district officers associated with election process.
Election Observer, K.S.S V.P. Reddy, was also present in the meeting.
The minute details of various aspects for the smooth conduct of Lok Sabha election in the District like training of polling staff, preparation of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), plan for placement of spare EVMs and collection and shifting of EVMs were reviewed at the meeting. The meeting also took a detailed review of the arrangements for postal ballots, mock poll exercise on EVMs before start of polling, randomization of polling staff and micro-observers, arrangements for migrant polling, scheduled for dispatch of polling parties, light and water arrangements at all polling booths and transport plan.
Exhorting upon the officers to put in their sincere efforts to coordinate the election process in the best way, the DEO said that things be put at the right place before the start of polling in the district in all the three segments. He instructed the AROs to direct their Zonal and Sector Magistrates to be more vigilant in the event of failure of any EVM and ensure their replacement within an hour as per the guidelines of ECI.
The Election Observer, Reddy speaking on the occasion exhorted upon the Assistant Returning Officers of Udhampur, Ramnagar and Chenani to issue strict instructions to their Presiding Officers to conduct mock poll exercise on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) well before the start of polling on April 23, 2009 in the presence of authorized polling agents of different political parties to ensure transparency and to rule out any pre-loaded data in EVMs. Checking of EVMs thoroughly was an essential part in election, he added.
Earlier, second randomization of polling staff was held through computerized process in the presence of Election Observer and District Election Officer to allot respective polling stations to poll staff.
Last evening, the District Election Officer, Udhampur accompanied by SSP Udhampur, Surinder Gupta including ARO migrants, Udhampur also convened a meeting with officers in PG College for Boys, Udhampur to discuss arrangements for the smooth conduct of polling of migrant voters putting up in Udhampur slated to take place on April 30, May 07 and May 13, 2009. The DEO and SSP also visited proposed halls of the college where ballot boxes would be kept on the evening of April 23 in strong rooms.
The DEO issued necessary instructions to officers of PWD, PDD and PHE to make necessary arrangements in making fool proof strong rooms. The SSP assured to provide necessary security on the dates of migrants polling here besides, adequate deployment of security personnel around strong rooms and its peripheries.
