| Govt survey indicates 9% increase in education from 2001 census | | | Early Times Report Jammu ,April 19 : There is about nine percent increase in the overall literacy rate of Jammu and Kashmir with Jammu district leading the way with 77.02 percent, suggests the government figures based on the latest survey conducted by directorate of Economics and Statistics.
Official sources told that in 2008, the state literacy rate registered 64.18 percent compared to 54.46 in 2001.
The literacy picture presents an encouraging statistics for both urban as well as rural areas of the state. While the literacy rate in urban areas has shoot-up to 75.36 compared to 71.27 percent in 2001, the rural areas, despite lack of infrastructure, are not far away also. According to the survey, the rural literacy has touched 61.18 percent mark.
The Jammu district, despite the calls of discrimination by certain quarters, leads the way in the education picture.
The Jammu district has achieved a rare feat compared to other thirteen districts, registering 77.02 percent literacy. The district also tops the list when it comes to female education with 68.55 percent.
The men still lead the literacy figures with a commendable 72.32 percent, registering an increase by seven percent as per the census of 2001 which showed male literacy at 65.75%.
While the Jammu also tops male literacy rate, with also 16.94 percent behind the goal of cent percent literacy, registering whooping 83.06 percent while Srinagar, the summer capital comes at third place, behind Samba district. While Samba has 82.59 percent male literacy, Srinagar registers 74.94 percent.
The over all female literacy has also registered an encouraging upward trend compared to 41.82 percent in the 2001 census, registering at 54.44 percent.
According to the survey, the far flung districts of the state including the Kupwara and Doda also register encouraging figures even though they are behind the other districts. While Kupwara registers 28.68 percent growth, the Doda has achieved a growth of 29.85 percent.
Pertinently, the 1981 and 2001 census showed the overall literacy percentage at 25.01 and 54.46 percent respectively. In 1981, 41.46 males of rural population were educated while female literacy was 18.37 percent.
Among the Urban population, during the survey of 1981, 59.87 percent males were educated while the females stood at 41.05 percent.
In 2001, the literacy rate for rural men stood at 65.75 while for urban ones it was 80.30. Similarly for fairer-sex, 41.82 percent of rural females were literate while for Urban population, it was 62.22 percent.
