Early Times Report
UDHAMPUR, Apr 22: The Department of Geology, Government Degree College (Boys), Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, celebrated World Earth Day 2025 with great enthusiasm and a strong message of environmental responsibility. Commemorating the 55th anniversary of Earth Day, this year's theme, "Our Power, Our Planet", served as a call to action for sustainable living and conservation efforts.
The celebration began with the symbolic plantation of a sapling in the college's Botanical Garden by the Principal, Dr. Sanjay Kumar Verma, who emphasized the importance of sustainable development. During his address, Dr. Verma encouraged students to embrace environmental stewardship and act as brand ambassadors for conservation, inspiring others to take steps towards protecting the planet.
Prof. (Dr.) Sukh Chain Sharma, Head of the Department of Geology, also addressed the gathering and highlighted the critical need for environmental conservation and the protection of natural resources.
The event was coordinated by Dr. Waquar Ahmed, Mr. Sumit Johar, and Mr. Rajesh Manhas, all faculty members from the Geology Department. Dr. Waquar Ahmed, who organized the event, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing his appreciation to Dr. Verma for his presence and support. He noted that "small steps like planting trees multiply when we act together, ensuring a healthier planet for generations to come."
As part of the celebration, the Geology Department showcased a wide range of rock, mineral, and fossil specimens, which attracted interest and curiosity among students and faculty alike.
The event was graced by several faculty members from different departments, including Prof. S. K. Dogra, Head, Physics Department; Dr. Jagjeet Singh, Associate Professor, Chemistry Department; Ms. Asha Sohil, Assistant Professor, Environmental Sciences; and Dr. Nikita Gandotra and Ms. Nitika Mahajan, Assistant Professors, English Department.
The celebration served as a meaningful reminder of the collective responsibility to safeguard the Earth, echoing the spirit of this year's Earth Day theme-Our Power, Our Planet.
