KVK Reasi celebrates World Earth Day

REASI, Apr 22: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu(SKUAST-J) organized World Earth Day here today at Govt.High School Tanda in Reasi distt. of J&K which was actively attended by a large number of school children and teachers. The programme was organized under the dynamic stewardship of Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. B.N. Tripathi and able guidance of Director Extension, Prof. Amrish Vaid of SKUAST-J.Chief Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi, Dr.Banarsi Lal spoke on the protection of planet Earth and gave a detailed view of plastic pollution. He informed the participants that the theme of this year World Earth Day is "Our Power,Our Planet ". He stressed on the balance between environment and development. He narrated that plastics are disrupting human beings and causing major life-threatening diseases. He added that the exponential growth of plastics is threatening our planet's survival. While guiding the participants he said that plastics take many of years to decay and their use should be reduced as more as possible. He urged the participants to use jute, cloth or paper bags as the alternatives of plastics bags.Earlier Dr. Arvinder Kumar started the programme with the warm welcome of the participants. He said that there is need to focus on environmental concerns ranging from pollution to global warming and sustainable food production to protection of wildlife. He informed the participants that with the increase in the pollution, the percentage of green house gases emission have been increased resulting in the harmful effects on human beings and animals. He further said that we should plant more and more trees so that our environment can be made free of harmful gases. He said that plastics negatively impact the natural environment and create problems for plants, wildlife and human beings. Headmaster of School, Amir Chand also speak during the programme and stressed on more and more plantation. He highlighted the holistic approach for environment protection. Romesh Chander, Sr. Teacher thanked KVK Reasi for organising such a useful programme. KVK scientists urged the participants to fully participate in the protection and cleanliness of the area and said that afforestation and other environment related activities cannot be successful without the help of local communities. They explained the water, air, soil and plastic pollution and their negative effects on the environment. They also highlighted the causes and effects of global warming. The programme was assisted by Manohar Lal and Mohd. Iqbal and concluded by Romesh Chander with the formal vote of thanks.
