Road Safety Awareness Programme held

SAMBA, May 1: To promote awareness about traffic rules and emphasize the importance of road safety among the youth, a road safety awareness programme was organized today at Bhargava Higher Secondary School, Samba. The event was led by G.L. Sharma, JKPS, SSP Traffic Rural Jammu, who interacted with students and staff, highlighting alarming statistics related to traffic accidents. He informed the gathering that India records an average of over 1.60 lakh deaths annually due to road accidents, with 1.72 lakh fatalities reported in 2023 alone. In Jammu and Kashmir, around 900 people lose their lives each year in road accidents, contributing to the global toll of over 11 lakh deaths annually. SSP Sharma emphasized that traffic discipline is crucial not only for saving lives but also for reducing public inconvenience and conserving time. He urged the students to adhere to the Motor Vehicle Act and traffic regulations, underlining that the youth have a key role in spreading awareness within their families and communities. The Traffic Police officials announced that such awareness initiatives will continue and be intensified in the coming days to foster a culture of road safety and responsibility among all sections of society.
