| Apr 23 polling to decide fate of four Singh’s | | Campaigning for Udhampur LS seat ends | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 21- Political parties made determined last-minute attempts to woo voters as campaigning for the second round of the five phased Lok Sabha and By-election assembly segment of Bhaderwah in Jammu region came to an end today. Reports said that apart from the fourteen candidates, who are in fray for the parliamentary constituency; leaders of all the major political parties were seen campaigning in favour of their respective party candidate. The by-elections to Bhaderwah assembly constituency, necessitated after former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad vacated the seat for Rajya Sabha berth, will go to polls on April 23 amid tightened security. The Udhampur- Doda constituency, second of the six parliamentary constituencies of the state going to polls on April 23, comprise on 17 Assembly segments spread over six districts of Kathua, Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban and Reasi. Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda on Monday visited district headquarters at Ramban, Doda and Kishtwar districts and chaired a high level meeting of the senior Police officers and Para-military forces to review of the security arrangements for the constituency, to keep at bay any attempts to disturb the polls, a police spokesman said. Political pundits believe that the contest is likely to be triangular among three Singhs. While Congress has again trusted old stalwart and sitting Member Parliament Choudhary Lal Singh from the segment, he is challenged by Bhartiya Janta Party’s, Dr Nirmal Singh and president of National Panther Party, Professor Bhim Singh. The Congress is wooing voters on slogans of development, strengthening secularism and Welfare with party leaders stressing on abandoning ‘politics of hate’. Political pundits believe that with the support by National Conference, Choudhary Lal Singh has an added edge over his rivals. On the other hand, the BJP continues to rely on the Amarnath land row after it proved productive for the party during last assembly segment, winning 11 seats, for the first time in the history of the elections in the state. NPP candidate Bhim Singh has been embarking on delimitation and alleged discrimination of Jammu against the Kashmir valley. The Lok Sabha segment, going to polls in the second of the five phased election calendar on April 23, has been mainly held by Congress. In 1967 elections, Udhampur constituency was represented by Congress candidate Retired Brigadier Ghansara Singh while as in 1971 midterm polls; the constituency was represented by Dr. Karan Singh again on a Congress ticket. In 1977 Lok Sabha elections Dr. Karan Singh won as an INC candidate. In the midterm 1980 Parliamentary elections, the seat was yet again won by Dr. Karan Singh, however, this time on INC (U) ticket. In 1984, the seat was won by G. L. Dogra as INC candidate while as in 1989 General Election, Udhampur seat was won by Dharam Chand of INC and in 1996 the seat was won by Janak Raj Gupta on BJP ticket. In 1998 and 1999 elections, Professor Chaman Lal Gupta of BJP represented the constituency. In 2004, the constituency witnessed an interesting battle between Choudhary Lal Singh of congress and Professor Chaman Lal Gupta of BJP. In a total of 6, 08,074 votes casted, Singh polled 2, 40,872 votes while Gupta was voted by 1, 93,697. The other candidates include Adrees Ahmad of CPI, People’s Democratic Party’s Balbir Singh, Rakesh Wazir of BSP, Rajesh Manchanda of Rashtriya Krantikari Samajwadi Party, Master William Gill of All India Forward Bloc and the remaining are independents in the shape of Atul Sharma, Dr Bodh Raj, Kanchan Sharma, Dev Raj, Mohammad Yousuf and Naresh Dogra. For by-election to Bhadarwah assembly constituency, eight candidates are in battle even though one of the Azad’s cousin brothers Sharief Niaz has an edge over his rivals
