4/22/2009 11:16:45 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 22- Police in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district are planning a major drive to round up hundreds of youth to ensure smooth conduct of third phase of parliamentary polls next week.
Reports said that the district police is gearing up to launch vigorous drive to round up more than 100 youth in twin towns of Sopore and Baramulla to ensure peaceful polls in the district scheduled to be held at the end of this month. They said, senior officials of police have been holding meetings at the district police lines in this regard.
“A list of 50 youth mostly hailing from old and new town of the district have been formed by the police and they’ll be rounded in the coming days. They are trouble makers and resort to stone pelting in the areas,” sources said.
“Similarly, Sopore police has formed a list of 50 youth aged 12-25, and they too will be rounded ahead of the elections on April 30,” they added.
Sources said as part of their strategy, police has deployed their men in civvies at the trouble spots in Sopore and Baramulla towns to keep a close watch on the youth resorting to stone pelting. They said some of the cops have even been equipped with cameras to capture the clashes which are previewed later before the senior police officials at the district police lines.
“The footage of the clashes is previewed in a meeting attended by senior officers of the police department at the police lines. This helps police to identify the trouble makers,” sources said, adding “The chances are likely that the some more youth will be added to the existing list in the next few days.”
The coming Friday, sources said, will be very significant for the police department to chalk out their strategy for the smooth conduct of elections in the district. “Police will keenly monitor the situation coming Friday before going ahead with their planned drive.” they added.
