Special exhibition on Basohli Miniature Paintings held

JAMMU, May 18: Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums, J&K joined the global celebration of International Museum Day 2025 at Dogra Art Museum, Jammu.
Every year 18th May is celebrated as International Museum Day across the world. The day is observed to celebrate the diversity of our cultural heritage and the efforts being made for the preservation of our tangible and intangible heritage. The Theme for this year’s International Museum Day is “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities”.
To mark the occasion, a special exhibition on Basohli Miniature Paintings was organised, showcasing the intricate artistry and historical significance of this unique painting style. The exhibition provided visitors with a rare opportunity to explore the vibrant colours, detailed compositions, and rich heritage of Basohli art, which has long been recognized as an integral part of India’s artistic legacy. The event was organised on the directions of K.K. Sidha, Director, Archives, Archaeology and Museums, J&K and has further directed for free entry of the visitors to the museums of the Department in J&K for this day.
The event started by way of lightning of traditional lamp by Prof. Poonam Choudhary, Director, Centre for Studies in Museology, University of Jammu, Prof. Vishal Sharma, Dean, School of Social Science, Cluster University of Jammu, Prof. Ranjodh Singh, H.O.D. History, Govt. Degree College, Samba, Prof. Surinder Parihar, H.O.D. History, G.C.W., Gandhi Nagar and Sh. Mukul Magotra, Curator, Dogra Art Museum, Jammu.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Poonam Choudhary from the University of Jammu emphasized the importance of museums in fostering cultural exchange and education. She applauded the Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museum’s efforts in curating exhibitions that not only preserve history but also inspire future generations to appreciate and engage with traditional art forms.
The celebration of International Museum Day 2025 at the Dogra Art Museum underscored the evolving role of museums as dynamic spaces for learning, innovation, and community engagement. By offering free entry, the museum ensured accessibility for all, encouraging a wider audience to participate in the festivities and deepen their understanding of Jammu’s rich artistic heritage.
The event is curated and coordinated by Mukul Magotra, Curator, Dogra Art Museum, Jammu under the supervision of Sh. K.K. Sidha, Director, Archives, Archaeology and Museums, J&K.
