| Phase second polling for Udhampur-Doda today | | Security tightened in view of perception of smilitnat strikes | | Salman Imtiaz Nizami Despite the election campaign concluded in a cold atmosphere still Udhampur-Doda constituency is to face tough Polls today. In total 11 candidates who are in fray the contest between old rivals, congress and BJP is not going to be cake walk. The party workers of NC, Congress, and BJP largely joined the PDP soon after the assembly election and JKNPP chairman Prof. Bhim Singh being a strong stake holder in the constituency. Earlier it used to be straight contest between BJP, and Congress but according to the present situation and the ground realities Congress, BJP, PDP and JKNPP are contestants neck to neck. In the case of Panthers Party Ramnagar- Reasi belt is favouring it where as Doda-Kishtwar belt have active influence by PDP, NC, and Congress whereas Banihal, Ramban and gool area have jointly impact of PDP and Congress alliance which indicates the contest between four Political parties will be worth to watch. From Kathua, Udhampur, all the political parties are facing heat of internal rivalry which has to play a decisive role at the end of day. Similar to those of assembly elections political parties faced set back to groupism and lobbyism. The Udhampur-Doda constituency has a total electorate of 13, 62,382 which is second only to Jammu parliamentary constituency. The total voters also include 8,654 service electors out of the total electorate, 7, 16,405 male and 6, 45,977 female voters are registered for the 2009 Lok Sabha Elections. In comparison there were 13,48,721 voters registered for the 2004 parliamentary election, Lal Singh of INC won the seat when he defeated his nearest rival Prof Chaman Lal Gupta of BJP by a margin of 47,175 votes while Lal Singh polled 240872 votes. Prof Chaman Lal polled percentage was recorded at 45.09. In 1967 elections, Udhampur constituency was represented by Congress candidate Brigadier Ghansara Singh while in 1971 mid term polls, the constituency was represented by Dr. Karan Singh again on a Congress ticket, In 1977 Lok Sabha elections, this seat was again won by Dr. Karan Singh as Congress candidate. In the mid term 1980 parliamentary election, the seat was yet again won by Dr. Karan Singh however this time on JNC (U) ticket. In 1984, the seat was won by G.L. Dogra as INC candidate while in 1989 general elections Udhampur seat was won by Dharam Chand of Congress. In 1996, the seat was won by Chaman Lal Gupta on BJP ticket, in 1998 and 1999 election, Gupta again represented the constituency. However tight security blanket has been thrown for second phase of parliamentary elections in which Udhampur-Doda constituency is going to Polls today. Besides district of Jammu region including Doda, Ramban, Kishtwar, the security has also been beefed up in Udhampur, Kathua with deployment of additional forces for free and fair Lok Sabha Polls. “Para Military forces including CRPF, BSF, among and other security agencies have been deployed in all the polling station in Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, districts of this parliamentary constituency,” official report said, adding that special security grid has hypersensitive polling booths. “Among 75 companies of central police force will assist the state police in managing the security apparatus and keep vigil on each and every movement of any anti national or anti social element for incident free elections, I.G. Jammu K. Rajindra said and added “We are combing the entire areas and special forces is being given to vulnerable location and polling stations”. Meanwhile DGP Kuldeep Khoda has already chaired a high level coordination meeting of Police officers to review the Poll related arrangements for second phase polls. Khoda reviewed the security situation and the arrangement being made for the second phase of elections to be held in Udhampur-Doda constituency, Accompained by the I.G Jammu zone K.Rajindera be assured the over all security scenario and sought appraisal of the poll preparedness of these districts.
