4/22/2009 11:44:54 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 22- As election authorities accepted the candidature of ruling National Conference candidate, Dr Mustafa Kamal, on Wednesday three candidates were left in fray for the by-election to Hazratbal scheduled to go for polls along the parliamentary polls for Srinagar-Budgam on May 07.
“The nomination papers for Dr Musatafa Kamal have been found as correct within the purview of law, returning officer for Hazratbal constituency,” Shahnawaz Bukhari said.
Reports suggested that Dr Kamal had failed to submit all the required documents in support of his nomination.
Reports said that the party’s authority letter enclosed with the Kamal’s nomination papers did not carry the name of the candidate, an assertion categorically rejected by Dr. Kamal.
“Fighting election is nothing new for me. To my knowledge, my name was very much on the party’s authority letter,” said Kamal who lost elections from Tangmarg constituency last year. Kamal, brother of National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, during by-election from Pattan constituency defeated Moulvi Iftikhar Hussein Ansari in 2004.
With the acceptance of his candidature, three candidates will battle it out for Hazratbal constituency on May 07.
Apart from Kamaal, People Democratic Party candidate Asiea Naqash, and president of Save Srinagar Front, Mufti Nazimudin, are in fray for the Hazratbal constituency.
Pertinently, as many as eighteen candidates were in fray when Farooq Abdullah, patron NC, won the assembly segment by a huge margin of 4272 votes in November-December elections last years.
While Farooq polled 11041 votes with an overall percentage of 44.66 percent, Asiea was voted by 6769 voters, securing 27.38 percent votes.
The other candidate in fray from the polls, Mufti Nazim-ud- Din even counterfeited security deposit and got only 587 votes.
The seat was later vacated by Farooq Abdullah after he got elected to the Rajya Sabha.
