Early Times Report
DARHAL, May 22: In a vibrant display of environmental commitment, Government Degree College (GDC) Darhal celebrated International Biodiversity Day with a series of thought-provoking activities aimed at fostering awareness about ecological conservation and sustainability.
The day-long event, organized jointly by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and the National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit, was held under the esteemed patronage of Prof. Zamir Ahmed Mirza, Principal of GDC Darhal. The celebration drew significant participation from students, faculty, and members of the local community.
The highlight of the event was a keynote address by noted environmentalist Dr. Muzamil Shah, who spoke extensively on the theme of this year's Biodiversity Day. Emphasizing the interconnectedness of biodiversity and human survival, Dr. Shah shed light on the urgent threats posed by urbanization, pollution, and climate change.
"Biodiversity is not just the variety of species - it is the very foundation of our existence. Our food, water, medicine, and resilience to climate change depend on it," Dr. Shah noted. He called upon the youth to serve as "ambassadors of change" and urged educational institutions to integrate biodiversity and sustainability into academic curricula.
The event began with an introductory address by Dr. Mohd Akhlaq Malik, NSS Programme Officer, who welcomed the participants and outlined the significance of the day. The program concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Atta Ul Rehman Malik, Head of the Department of Political Science.
A large number of faculty members actively participated in the seminar, including Dr. Ghulam Abass, Dr. Mohd Saleem Wani, Dr. Taseem Ahmed, Dr. Anzaar Ahmed, Dr. Sugar, Dr. Mukhtar, Dr. Shakeel Kataria, Dr. Mohd Shakoor, Dr. Sumina, and others.
The event not only reinforced the college's dedication to environmental education but also served as an inspiration for students to take active roles in preserving biodiversity for future generations.
