Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 22: To commemorate World Book and Copyright Day, the NSS Unit of College in collaboration with the Department of Library, organized a vibrant and thought-provoking programme aimed at promoting awareness about books, reading habits, and intellectual property rights.
The event began on a solemn note with one-minute mourning observed in memory of the victims of the Pahalgam attack and martyrs of Operation Sindoor, paying tribute to their courage and sacrifice.
The formal proceedings commenced with the lighting of the traditional lamp, followed by a welcome address by Dr. Amir Malik from the Department of Education. In his remarks, Dr. Malik emphasized the cultural, educational, and personal significance of reading and the importance of celebrating such occasions to rekindle the love for books in today's digital age.
A quiz contest was the highlight of the event, featuring enthusiastic participation from students across different semesters. The quiz tested knowledge in global literature, famous authors, publishing history, copyright laws, environmental concerns, and current affairs. The contest encouraged healthy competition and deepened literary awareness among the participants. The event was supervised and adjudicated by Prof. Deepa Kak, Head of the Department of Education, and Prof. Shonima Malhotra, Head of the Department of Sociology.
Following the contest, an insightful lecture titled "How to Revive the Dying Culture of Reading Among Students" was delivered by Dr. Harpreet Kour, an expert in publishing and intellectual property rights. She discussed the challenges facing reading habits in the digital era and stressed the importance of respecting and protecting creative works through copyright law. Dr. Kour emphasized that books remain powerful tools of cultural transmission and intellectual growth.
Dr. G.S. Rakwal, Principal of the college, addressed the gathering and underscored the transformative power of books in shaping thoughtful, knowledgeable societies. "This day reminds us of the power of books in building knowledge societies and the importance of protecting the rights of authors and publishers," he stated, reaffirming the institution's commitment to fostering a culture of reading.
The event was efficiently conducted by Mr. Hilal Sheikh, the college librarian, and concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Purvaiya Hans, NSS Programme Officer. Prizes were awarded to the winning teams, recognizing their excellence and enthusiasm.
Organized under the guidance of Dr. G.S. Rakwal, the event saw active participation from faculty, students, NSS volunteers, and the Library Committee. It concluded with a collective pledge to foster a love for books and uphold the spirit of copyright and creativity in both academic and personal pursuits.
