Traffic Police Jammu Conducts Three-Day Drive Against Vehicles

Jammu, May 24: The Traffic Police City Jammu successfully concluded a three-day “Awareness-cum-Enforcement” drive targeting vehicles with low Visual Light Transmission (VLT) levels, in strict compliance with Supreme Court guidelines.
The initiative aims to improve passenger safety by ensuring clear visibility inside vehicles, preventing crimes such as eve-teasing, theft, and snatching.
The drive was based on the Supreme Court ruling in Avishek vs. Union of India (2012), which mandates that front and rear windscreens must have at least 70% VLT, while windows should maintain a minimum of 50% VLT.
These standards help ensure adequate visibility inside vehicles, which is crucial for passenger safety and effective monitoring through CCTV cameras.
During the operation, 82 vehicles—primarily Public Service Vehicles (PSVs)—were fined for violating these norms.
Officials emphasized that tinted windscreens and windows with low visibility not only breach the Motor Vehicle Act and Supreme Court directives but also pose serious safety risks for passengers.
In addition to enforcement, awareness programs were conducted for operators of mini-buses, buses, and tempos, educating them about the importance of adhering to VLT regulations.
This initiative also aligns with the objectives of the Safe City Project, which focuses on enhancing women’s safety in public spaces—a program launched following the 2012 Nirbhaya case in New Delhi.
