| Air Force reacts on Early Times story; throws onus on joint director information | | No ego clash, ‘Surya Kiran’ cancelled for want of NoC: Def PRO | |
EARLY TIMES REPORTER JAMMU| SEPT 23
In what the defence PRO referred to as rebuttal of the story carried by Early Times on its issue dated September 22 last, the PRO in fact has agreed to this news paper’s claim that the Air Show slated for Sunday, September 23 was cancelled because state authorities did not give clearance for the same. Even as the Early Times had referred that the state government refused permission for the show, the defence PRO in a letter to the publication today said that the same was cancelled because DC Jammu did not give NOC for the show. This raises a question that why the organizers expressed over enthusiasm and started publicizing the show without seeking prior NOC from the authorities concerned. The banners that were tied on various crossings in the city including the much crowded Shalamar Chowk and Bikramn Chowk announcing the show should have been hung only after obtaining NOC from the concerned. However, Early Times had no malicious intention towards any agency. It only carried a news report stating that the show has been cancelled. It however, also mentioned that newsmen on duty assigned by their respective organizations the task to cover the news conference were meted with bad treatment and were not allowed entry inside. Even if the show was cancelled, the defence authorities or the state information should have informed the media before for the two reasons – one to avoid inconvenience to those who had visited the AF station to receive bad treatment and two to inform the public in general through their columns about the cancellation. No official handout was ever issued stating that the show has been cancelled. Meanwhile, the defence PRO, in his letter to the Early Times also mentions today that inconvenience to the media was caused because information authorities failed to intimate the cancellation to the media. However, our story mentioned that the joint director Information had said that even their department was not informed by the defence authorities about the same. The letter from the PRO further says that the newspaper should have ascertained facts from PRO defence. The newspaper would like mention here that our reporter tried to contact the PRO on his mobile number for pretty long but there was no response the other end.
