| Kishanganga projects halts over local dispute | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 24-The work on the 330 MWs Kishan Ganga hydel project in Bandipore district stands suspended because of dispute between the NHPC that is executing the project, and the villagers. Villagers are agitated over the way they have either not received any compensation for the land acquired by the NHPC or they had been given inadequate compensation. Another demand of the villagers is that those families that had been displaced by the project needed to be rehabilitated. The PDP MLA, Nizam-ud-Din Bhat who has been mediating between the villagers and the NHPC said that both the NHPC and the state Government should come forward so that displaced families were not only given adequate compensation but were assured of rehabilitation in a nearby area. He said that the people in Bandipore area wanted the NHPC to give employment to the local youths in the project. The PDP General Secretary said that any further delay on the part of the Government and the NHPC would delay the construction of the project. If there was further delay it would prolong electricity shortage in the state. The PDP leadership has been demanding due compensation to the state in lieu of the losses suffered owing to the Indus Water Treaty that imposes restrictions on the use of river water for power generation. It has demanded transfer of 390 MW Dhulhasti power project from the central sector to the state sector which could be treated as compensation for the losses.
