| Minister reviews irrigation projects | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, APRIL 24: Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Mr Taj Mohi-ud-Din visited Ravi Canal project today. He was accompanied by Chief Engineers Mr B R Dogra, Mr Dalip Bakshi, Mr V K Abrol and other engineering staff of the departments. The Minister visited lift irrigation station Lakhanpur, one of the components of Ravi Project, and was apprised about the upgradation of the pump station machinery installed at this station, which was undertaken under BADP. The pumping machinery shall lift water to its designed capacity of 200 cusecs. Mr Taj visited the proposed Shahpur Kandi Dam site and was informed about the salient features of the dam which has yet not been taken up by the Punjab government thus depriving J&K state for utilization of full share of Ravi water. Then, the Minister was apprised about the alternative proposal for taking up Ravi canal upstream of Ranjit Sagar Dam at Satwain from inflow of River Ravi. The Minister had an overall view of the area and issued instructions for taking up detailed investigations by engaging consultants with Ravi canal proposed head works at Satwain. Regarding water supply, it was apprised that the work for upgradation of water supply in Kathua town is already in progress with an estimated cost of Rs.21.36 crore under UIDSSMT envisaging drilling and commissioning of nine tube-wells besides construction of nine of storage tanks of nine lakh gallons capacity which will add 3.15 MGD of water. It was revealed that an amount of Rs.7.81 crore have been spent ending March 2009 and all the nine tube-wells have been drilled water of four tube-wells have been added directly in to the distribution system enhancing water service level in the area. Similarly, work on all nine numbers over head tanks is in progress. Out of which four are nearing completion stage. The project is expected to be completed in the year 2009-10 adding 3.15 MGD water which is sufficient for the next fifteen yeas. In rural area 85 schemes under ARWSP have been taken up with an estimate cost of Rs 96 crore. Out of which 29 schemes have been completed and Rs 51 crore have been spent so far upto ending March 2009. Benefiting 113 habitations with population of 90000 souls work on other ongoing schemes has been accelerated as per direction of Minister for completion of many more schemes in near future so as to accrue benefit to public particularly in kandi area.
