| Fire incidents on rise, brigade under scanner | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 24- Working of the Fire Brigade Department in rural areas of Jammu region have come under scanner following rising incidents of fire in agriculture fields in RS Pura, Samba, Bari Brahmana and Kathua. In all such cases the farmers and local villagers have alleged long delay caused by the fire brigade vehicles in reaching their destinations resulted in loss of ripened crop. Pointing fingers towards the non-performance and absence of adequate fire extinguishers stationed in villages, Ram Pal, an elderly farmer in RS Pura area said that fire break out during summer but after the fire incident takes place they fail to establish instant contact with the fire brigade authorities and in some cases even the local police officers do not respond to their frequent pleas to rush fire extinguishers to prevent the major fire breakout. Everywhere, fire incidents took place local villagers were seen desperately dousing off the flames using everything at their disposal in the absence of fire brigade services. On the other hand the senior officials of the department argued that in order to prevent fire breakouts local villagers need to undertake certain precautions to prevent fore break out. A senior officer who visited RS Pura fire station on Friday directed the local officers to stay in touch with the local farmers to coordinate the fire extinguishing measures and advised to exercise restraint in lighting cigarettes near dry fields. The fire brigade officers maintained that during summers they activate all their centres and without losing precious time rush fire extinguishers to the site of accident to prevent losses of innocent farmers. Meanwhile, National Conference leader from RS Pura visited farmers and demanded crop insurance scheme and more fire extinguishers in rural areas to contain fire accidents.
