23 candidates in fray for north Kashmir LS seat

Srinagar, Apr 24- Twenty three candidates have been left in fray for the north Kashmir Parliamentary constituency as nine candidates filed their nomination papers on the last date on Friday.
Fourteen candidates including chairman of his faction of PC Sajad Gani Lone, NC leader Shareef-ud-din Shariq, PDP candidate Mohammad Dilawar Mir filed their nomination papers till Thursday the constituency which goes to polls in the last round of the staggered five phased ongoing elections on May 13.
Official sources said that a woman candidate Shafiqa Akhtar was among nine candidates who filed nominations in the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla, Lateef-ul-Zaman Deva who is also the returning officer for the segment.
Baramulla Parliamentary constituency, set to go to polls on May 13, has a total electorate of 10, 54,086, which includes 1,627 service electors. Out of the total registered voters, 5, 49,778 are male and 5, 04,308 female who will exercise their franchise in the Lok Sabha Elections 2009.

The constituency is spread over 14 assembly segments in three districts including Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora.
The segment has been pre-dominantly held by National Conference which is partner the ruling coalition the state.
In 1967 and 1971 midterm elections, Baramulla Parliamentary constituency was represented by Syed Ahmad Aga of the Congress. In 1977 elections, the seat was won by Abdul Ahad on NC while as in the midterm 1980 Parliamentary elections; the seat was won by Mubarak Shah, again of NC. In 1984 and 1989, the seat was won by Professor Saifuddin Soz on NC ticket. In 1996, the seat went to Ghulam Rasool Kar of INC while as in 1998 the seat was wrested by Professor Saif-ud-din Soz of NC while as in 1999 and 2004 the constituency was represented by Abdul Rashid Shaheen of NC.
