Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 24- The Department of Strategic and Regional Studies (DSRS), University of Jammu today organized a panel discussion on the topic “Current Developments in Sri Lanka”. The panelists were Dr. Baljit Singh of Department of Political Science, University of Jammu and Dr. Mathew Joseph C.(Director Incharge, DSRS, University of Jammu. Prof. Kulwant Kour HOD, Department of Political Science, University of Jammu presided.
Dr. Baljit Singh in his presentation pointed out that the military campaign launched by the Sri Lankan state against the LTTE has remained quite successful. He also discussed the comprehensive strategy adopted by the present administration in Sri Lanka to deal with the Tamils. “It is a multi-dimensional strategy having different dimensions like political, military, diplomatic and propaganda aspects. Although, the military strategy has remained successful so far, but the problem of Sri Lanka cannot be handled by the military means only. As it is an ethnic problem, therefore it needs political solution,” said Dr. Baljit Singh further said that the victory of military campaign will be short-lived if it will not be consolidated by the devolution of powers/sharing powers and thereby accommodating the Tamils into the political landscape of Sri Lanka. Merely defeating the LTTE will not serve the purpose because LTTE is the symptom not the cause of the problem.
Dr. Mathew Joseph C. In his presentation described how the LTTE has changed the nature of Tamil Nationalism over a period of time. “The LTTE has successfully changed the content of the all inclusive Tamil nationalism propagated by moderate organizations like TULF into an exclusive Tamil nationalism anchoring around upper caste Hindu traditions,” Dr. Mathew said adding that the exclusive Tamil nationalism, the LTTE has put forth eventually divided the people of the north and east of Sri Lanka.
He emphasized the point that had the LTTE indulged in an inclusive Tamil nationalist discourse; they could have avoided the present turmoil.
Prof. Kulwant Kour in her presidential remarks stated that the present crisis in Sri Lanka is a severe humanitarian one and the international community and the neighbours of Sri Lanka must step in to end the crisis and bring peace and stability to the island nation.
Dr. Mohammad Monir Alam Senior Assistant Professor, DSRS, University of Jammu welcomed the gathering.
