Mehbooba says, EC decision on Hazratbal puts question mark on poll body’s credibility

Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 24- Accusing ruling National Conference of misusing the official machinery in the ongoing elections, Peoples Democratic Party, President, Mehbooba Mufti on Friday said that the decision of Election Commissioner to rescind by-elections for the Hazratbal constituency will benefit the NC candidate.
“The ruling National Conference has started misusing the official machinery. The nomination papers of NC’s candidate for Hazratbal constituency Mustafa Kamal were invalid and incomplete. Despite objection by other candidates, Returning officer was pressurized by the ruling NC government to accept the nomination papers of Kamal,” Mehbooba said while addressing a press conference at her Gupkar residence on Friday morning.
“We appreciate the action of the Election Commission but they have committed one more mistake to rectify another. They have unconsciously favored NC by rescinding the election notification,” she added

Mehbooba said that due to the decision of the EC, other candidates were at the losing end. She said that it has been the tradition of NC since 1951 to resort to blackmailing and pressurizing government officials for favors.
“We are happy that Election commission intervened and cancelled the notification but it is a loss to other candidates and help to the culprits,” PDP, President said, adding “NC has been doing such acts since 1951. They are totally discredited and have nothing to lose but the Prime Minister’s reputation is at stake.
Launching a scathing attack on the NC, Mehbooba said that it is the same party that resorted to rigging in 1987 elections due to which the people were suffering even now. She said that NC handed seven power projects to government of India without taking its consequences into account. “We are suffering only because of the mistakes made by NC in the past. They rigged the elections in 1987 and they are planning to repeat the same in these elections,” PDP, President said.
Taking a dig at the ruling coalition government, Mehbooba said that the present coalition government has withdrawn the security of PDP leaders and workers and were harassing the people on the pretext of combating militancy. She said that the policy adopted by the government will force the youth to resort to violence.
“NC has very dangerous designs. They have surrendered the security of our leaders and workers due to which they cannot move freely,” PDP President said, adding “The government has adopted a policy to harass the people on the pretext of combating militancy. Their policy can provoke youth to resort to violence.”
Urging Prime Minister to intervene and ensure free and fair polls in the state, Mehbooba said that the previous Congress-PDP coalition government tried its best to restore the faith among the people. However, she said the acts of NC will blacken the face of democracy in Jammu and Kashmir. “I request Prime Minister to look into the mistakes made by NC in the past and ensure free and fair polls in the state.” she added.
