| Namgyal is Congress nominee for Ladakh | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 24: Amidst a deepening divide between Buddhist majority Leh and Muslim dominated Kargil districts, the Congress today nominated former Union Minister P Namgyal as the party candidate from the Ladakh parliamentary constituency. Namgyal has been a member of both Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha in the past. The Ladakh parliamentary constituency was being represented in the outgoing Lok Sabha by Ladakh Union Terriroty Front leader Thupstan Chhewang who won the 2004 elections without any formidable opposition. Under the alliance arrangement between ruling coalition partners, the Ladakh seat was bagged by the Congress but party could not name a nominee in view of a tussle between Kargil and Leh. Leh people associated with the National Conference and Congress wanted a Buddhist to contest elections while Kargil’s strong Islamia school pitched for a Muslim candidate from Kargil. Even though Ladakh Lok Sabha seat is being considered safest for the coalition, a decision between the ruling partners was arrived at after a prolonged stalemate. The stalemate between ruling partners over the candidate for the Ladakh Lok Sabha seat had ended on April 8 when he Congress was allowed to l field its candidate with support from the National Conference. The National Conference's argument had been that it had won two of the four seats in November-December assembly elections from the Ladakh region - Kargil and Zanskar. The Congress won one with its candidate Nawang Rigzin Jora getting re-elected from Leh.
