Domestic violence affects children’s mental health | | | Vijay Garg
The risk of brain disorders such as anxiety and depression are significantly higher in mothers’ children facing domestic violence in India. This thing has come out in a study. The study published in Pelos One magazine outlines the need for sensitivity to Trauma in school programs and improvement in prevention of domestic violence in India. Researchers from National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Sensortium, Bengaluru, studied at about 2,800 juvenile- mother’s joints. This data was collected from seven centres in urban and rural India in which adolescents from 12 to 17 were analyzed by mental health disorders and psychological, physical and sexual abuse occurring on their mothers. The researchers reported that more cases of anxiety and depression were reported in teenagers in their homes who are experiencing exploitation. An estimated one-third of women in India are victims of domestic violence making them more likely to face anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress disorder, and a suicide trend. This relationship has been well demonstrated in western studies, researchers said. He also added that studies conducted in India show that facing domestic violence may result in adverse consequences at birth such as miscarriage, dead or premature birth of a child and emotional behavioral and academic difficulties in children. The need to pay attention to joint family and emotional means: However, there is still a shortage in knowing how mothers facing domestic violence can affect the mental health of children, which requires attention to cultural aspects of domestic hins, such as joint family and emotional means. The authors clarified that a woman in the joint family system lives with her husband’s family, can act as family support but it can also promote domestic violence by directly or indirectly impacting the man. Other types of domestic violence include forcing women to return to their ancestral homes, using stones to hurt, and controlling birth outcomes by preventing contraception until a girl is born. Research authors said psychological violence involves verbal threats and harassment that is likely seen more by children.
