Voters disillusioned with system, says Mehbooba
4/25/2009 9:42:47 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Shopian, Apr 25- Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has said a vanishing sense of security, agenda-less governance and the Government’s failure to address the developmental concerns of the people is brewing disillusionment among the masses resulting in the sharp decline of voter turnout during the first two phases of Lok Saba polls in the State.
Addressing a public meeting in Wachi assembly segment of the Anantnag parliamentary constituency today, Mehbooba said the considerably low voter turnout during the first two phases of Lok Sabha polls in the State, as compared to 2008 assembly polls, reflects the growing disillusionment of the masses with the non-performing NC-led coalition Government. “A sense of insecurity and distress has started replacing the environment of relaxation and economic development that was noticeable all around immediately after PDP-led coalition had taken over in 2002,” she said.
Mehbooba said with the NC-led Government back in the State, not only has returned the dark era of civilian killings by ‘unidentified’ gunmen, mysterious blasts, political arrests and oppression but arrival of a regime known for dictatorial policies, electoral malpractices, misuse of administration and ruthlessly repressing the political opponents. She, however, cautioned that repetition of such dubious conventional tactics by the NC would push the State back into a vortex of unending trauma. “Any misadventure by NC in the changed circumstances would prove disastrous for the State,” she cautioned.
The PDP President said instead of indulging in politics of vendetta to suppress the divergent political voices in the State, NC should concentrate on delivery of basic amenities like Sadak, Paani, Bijli and Rozgaar to the people which was the party’s main slogan during the 2008 assembly polls. “Unfortunately all these issues of public importance have been put by the NC Government on the back-burner,” she said and added that having already reneged on the commitment of providing one job to every family, the NC Government is also giving a damn to the issues of Sadak, Paani and Bijli.
PDP leaders Abdul Razaq Zawoora, Ghulam Hassan Bhat and Bashir Ahmad Malik also addressed the meeting.
