| Number plate at the cost of a Nano? | | For the love of AK, Bathindi resident shells Rs 85,000 | | Early Times Report Jammu, April 25: Barely a month after world’s second highest known bid for a car number plate in London, a gentleman in Jammu has set a record of his own by paying almost the price of a Nano car for registration number of his choice. As two decades of militancy make names of bombs and guns more popular in Jammu and Kashmir than many other things of desire, it was the number series, incidentally, after name of a gun which fetched highest price –Rs 85,000. One Mohammad Rafiq Mir of Bathindi paid Rs 85,000 to the Transport Authority in an open auction for the registration number AK-47. While 47 is the number allotted to his Honda Car, ‘AK’ is the current series –as part of JKO2AK. Authorities said this is the highest bid so far in Jammu and Kashmir. There were nearly ten other numbers like 1313, 1212 etc sold on bid but none could fetch more than Rs 10,000 each. In today’s bidding the Transport Authority earned more than Rs 3 lakhs by selling vanity numbers. The Transport Authority officials said that the highest bidder paid a total amount of Rs 107300, which included Rs Rs 22300 as taxes and Rs 85000 for the registration number. “This is the highest bid of any registration number in the history of Jammu and Kashmir”, Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Jammu Romesh Chander Sharma said. He said that the step was taken so as to earn revenue for the department. “Bidding for special registration number is not new and it is done every year”, he said adding, “However, we usually get Rs 5000 to 10000 for special numbers”. However, AK-47 being unique has attracted the highest bid, he added. He said that earlier the department held a similar open bidding for AK-57 bid, which was allotted for Rs 29300 to one Ranbhir Verma of Trikuta Nagar Jammu for his Hundai vehicle. It is trendy for the rich world over to buy number plates of choice. The highest bid so far has been reported from London in January 2008 when a car owner paid Pounds 4.41 lakh for the number ‘F1’. The second highest bidding was reported on March 26 this year at the price of Pound 3.2 lakhs when a Labanese property dealer bought the number D1. The highest known bid for vehicle number of choice has been reported from Ludhiana when one Vikas Nagpal paid Rs 272,000 for registration number ‘0001’ in December 2007.
