Vohra reviews Amarnath pilgrimage security issues

Jammu, Apr 25- Attaching high importance to the environmental concerns and taking further effective measures to preserve the ecology of the Himalayan region during the ensuing Shri Amarnathji Yatra, Governor, N N Vohra, in his capacity as Chairman of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) today appointed Dr Chander Mohan Seth, as Environment Consultant in the SASB.
Dr Seth, IFS, who retired last month as the Chairman of the State Pollution Control Board, will take up his new assignment from 1st May 2009.
The Governor had, earlier, nominated a three-member Environment Sub Committee of the Board, headed by an eminent environmentalist, Dr Sunita Narain, who is the well-known Director of the Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi.
According to a spokesperson of the SASB, Dr Seth shall function as the Member-Secretary of the Environment Sub Committee and shall monitor the progress and follow up the implementation of all decisions taken by the Sub Committee. He shall be responsible for the formulation and subsequent implementation of the long-term Plan for Ecological Conservation and Environment Management, as per the guidelines set by the Environment Sub Committee and approved by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board.
Meanwhile, ahead of this year’s Shri Amarnathji Yatra, the Governor, N N Vohra, reviewed the security and other related aspects of the Yatra at a high level meeting here today.
Among other concerns, the meeting focused on the crucial importance of putting in place effective access control at the base points of Baltal and Chandanwari to ensure that pilgrims could proceed towards the Holy Cave for Darshan only after the official commencement of the Yatra.
The Governor discussed all security related issues in detail with the senior officers of Civil Administration and the State Police.
The meeting also discussed and took decisions in regard to various specific security concerns relating to the Yatra to Shri Mata Vaishno Deviji.
The meeting was attended by the Financial Commissioner, Home, Samuel Verghese, Director General of Police, Kuldeep Khoda, Director General CID, Dr Ashok Bhan, Principal Secretary to Governor and the Chief Executive Officer of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, B B Vyas, Additional Chief Executive Officer Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Manoj Dwivedi and Additional Chief Executive Officer, Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, Madan Mantoo.
