Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 26- Natrang’s Weekly Theatre series ‘Sunday Theatre’ witnessed an engrossing intense play ‘Damaad’. Written by eminent playwright Balwant Gargi, the play was presented at Natrang Studio Theatre under the direction of Balwant Thakur. Though short in duration but electrifying theatrical effects kept the audience spellbound all through owing to powerful dramatics and effective histrionics.
The story of the play portrays the Punjab life of pre India Independence, revolves around a ‘Baagi’- freedom fighter, Himmat Singh who knocks at the door of a family, who are waiting the arrival of their son-in-law. The pleas of the old woman not to give shelter are hypnotically transformed by the ‘freedom fighter’, who pleads that to keep the flame of freedom burning; she has to give refuge to him. He even reminds her that her husband had sacrificed his life for the sake of freedom. The lady is moved that she not only give shelter to the ‘Baagi’ (revolutionary) but makes him sit near her daughter to pose as her husband only to avoid the police from arresting him. The police came and thought the ‘Baagi’ to be the real son-in-law, the police went away but kept a watch on the house. However, the ‘Baagi’ escapes after the police have left. Meanwhile, the original son-in-law also happens to come there and the story takes a new turn on the second entry of the police as they thought him to be the ‘Baagi’, when he was sitting beside his wife. The pleadings of the old lady that the second one is her original “Damad” falls on the deaf ears. The pathetic feelings of a lady, who has not only lost her husband but also sacrificed her “Damad” for the cause of freedom, are aesthetically portrayed in the play.
Gaurav Jamwal played the role of Baggi Himmat Singh with full confidence and maturity. He was equally supported by Mohit Sharma, Rahul Singh and Rohit verma who played the roles of Damaad, Police officer and the Constable respectively in a very lively manner. The two female characters Nihal Kaur and Bachno were played extremely well Divya Kohli and Tajasvi Sharma. The lights of the play were designed by Gaurav Jamwal and were executed by Vijay Kaul. The music of the play was scored by Hemant Bhollla and Anita Dhar did the presentations.
