| South Kashmir observes shutdown on Geelani’s call | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Apr 27-: South Kashmir observed complete shutdown in response to the call given by the Hurriyat Conference (G) to protest against the visit of Congress General Secretary, Rahul Gandhi to Anantnag district of valley on Monday. Reports said that amid heightened security a complete shutdown was observed in South Kashmir’s Anantnag, Shopian, Pulwama and Kulgam district in wake of the call given by Chairman of his faction of Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani to protest the Rahul Gandhi’s visit to valley on Monday. All shops, government offices, banks, petrol pumps and business establishments remained closed for the day. The private and public transport was also off the otherwise busy roads in response Hurriyat’s call. Security in entire South Kashmir was put at maximum following the visit of Congress General Secretary and the strike call given by Geelani. Reports said that stringent security measures were put in place around the high security zone, Dak Bunglow, the main venue where Rahul Gandhi had to address the gathering. Hundreds of paramilitary CRPF troops and policemen equipped with automatic rifles and riot gear were deployed around the venue to thwart any attempt of disruption by militants. Three tier security was in place at the main venue and the people who had come to attend the rally had to go through multiple security checks. Similar restrictions were put in place on the road links connecting Dak Bunglow with rest of the areas. Troops had also imposed strict restrictions on the movement of traffic and no vehicle was allowed to proceed to Islamabad from Khanabal crossing. Troops and police had laid concertina at Khanabal to block the movement of the traffic. The media men who had gone to cover the rally too had a tough time while proving their identity at numerous check points. Meanwhile, reports of partial shutdown were also received from the neighboring Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian districts where life was affected due to the strike call.
