| Srivastava, JS NCEBC | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, APRIL 27- Government has placed the service of A. K. Srivastava, Chief Wildlife Warden, J&K at the disposal of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India for his appointment to the post of Joint Secretary in the National Commission for Economically Backward Classes (NCEBC). Deepak Khanna, CCF, Eco-Tourism, will look after the charge of the Chief Wildlife Warden in addition to his own duties, till further orders.
It may be mentioned here that during his tenure as Chief Wildlife Warden Srivastava made significant and notable contribution to the cause of Wildlife Conservation in the State. He was responsible for scientific management of 60 Protected Areas in J&K, spread over 16,000 sq kms, which is largest number any State has got in the country. He had ensured an excellent coordination with the Government of India, Ministry of Environment and Forest, Wildlife Institute of India, leading voluntary organizations, research and academic institutions in the country promoting the cause of wildlife conservation. It was during his tenure that the species recovery programmes for the critically endangered wildlife species viz Hangul, Snow leopard and Markhor were launched. Under the Prime Minister’s Reconstruction Package, Management Action Plans of important Ramsar Sites like Surinsar-Mansar, Hokersar and Tso-moriri were launched and an ambitious Management plan for conservation of Wular lake was formulated and submitted to the Government of India for funding. An ambitious Eco-Tourism Management Plan has also been put in place for some important Wildlife Areas in collaboration with the State Tourism Department and the Jungle, Lodges and Resorts, a Government of Karnataka Undertaking. Handling of Human-Wild Animal Conflicts and Wildlife Crime Control in the State were given a very high priority during his tenure. Important initiatives on training and capacity building of the frontline staff of the Forest/ Wildlife department had been taken. During his tenure, timely compliance of various landmark orders of the Supreme Court of India and the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir was ensured. The most significant contribution of Srivastava was the finalization of declaration and certification of Shahtoosh products and settling the long pending issue of the acquisition and payment of compensation to fur stock holders. The destruction of fur stocks under wide media coverage was perhaps the biggest global conservation event of its kind.
