On 1st July 2025, India celebrated 10 years of Digital India, a flagship initiative launched in 2015 to bridge the digital divide and empower citizens through technology. The Digital India initiative has revolutionized the lives of countless citizens, empowering them with access to information, services, and opportunities. By revolutionizing the way citizens live, work, and interact with government services, the Digital India initiative has had a profound impact on the lives of millions, creating new opportunities and improving overall quality of life. Over the past decade Digital India has revolutionized internet access, governance, financial inclusion, and digital infrastructure, positioning India as the world’s third-largest digital economy. Digital India initiative was launched on 1st July 2015, to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge-based economy by strengthening digital infrastructure, ensuring digital delivery of services, and promoting financial inclusion. Today, Digital platforms have given rise to new business models, enabling entrepreneurs and small businesses to reach a wider audience and access global markets. Digital India has increased transparency, accountability, and efficiency in governance, allowing citizens to participate in decision-making processes and hold authorities accountable. PM Modi has rightly said that the initiative is no longer just a government programme but a people’s movement and the Digital India has not remained a mere government program, it has become a people’s movement. It is central to building an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, and to making India a trusted innovation partner to the world. India has laid over 42 lakh kilometres of optical fibre and deployed 4.8 lakh 5G base stations, becoming one of the fastest nations to roll out 5G. Modi credited Digital India with enhancing transparency and curbing corruption through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), which has enabled the transfer of Rs 34 lakh crore directly to beneficiaries, saving Rs 3.48 lakh crore by eliminating middlemen. Over 6.15 lakh villages now have 4G mobile connectivity, and 2.18 lakh Gram Panchayats are connected with high-speed fiber optic internet. India has become a global leader in real-time digital payments, with over Rs 1 crore traded every second through UPI. India achieved 99.6% district coverage in under 22 months, with 4.74 lakh 5G towers installed by April 2025. Over 42 lakh km of optical fiber cable has been laid, connecting remote villages to the digital world. Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) has saved Rs 3.5 lakh crore by transferring subsidies directly into citizens’ bank accounts. Digital payment systems and online banking have increased financial inclusion, enabling citizens to access financial services and participate in the formal economy. Digital India Initiatives includes Aadhaar (unique 12-digit biometric IDs), BharatNet (high-speed broadband to rural areas), Digital Locker (secure cloud storage of documents), BHIM UPI (secure digital payments), eSign (online document signing using digital signatures), MyGov (citizen participation in governance) etc. Digital India has ushered in a new era of empowerment, touching countless lives and opening up new opportunities for innovation and economic growth. The initiative has made governance more transparent, efficient, and inclusive. India is now recognized as a leader in digital innovation and infrastructure. By empowering citizens with digital tools and services, Digital India has opened up new opportunities for economic growth, social mobility, and civic engagement, transforming the lives of millions and shaping a brighter future for the nation. |
