ashwani sharma Early Times Report UDHAMPUR, July 5: As monsoon clouds gather over Udhampur, an urgent safety threat is casting an even darker shadow. Multiple electricity transformers installed across densely populated areas of the town are dangerously exposed, raising serious concerns among residents. Locations like Guardian Talab (near the temple), near the Govt Middle School , Shakti Nagar , Dhar Road to Bank of India lane near Salathia Chowk, and several others have transformers placed perilously close to roads and lanes-without any fencing or proper safeguards. The risk is heightened due to the ongoing rainy season, where water accumulation around these exposed transformers could lead to short circuits, electrocution, or even fatal accidents. Adding to the danger, the fuses are installed at unsafe heights, making them easily reachable and hazardous for both technicians and the general public-especially children on their way to school. "These transformers are ticking time bombs, and in this weather, they're even deadlier," warned a concerned local. "One downpour and an exposed wire could cost lives." When contacted , the JKPDCL Executive Engineer (Xen) responded, "This hasn't come to my notice; I will get it checked." But the community insists they've raised this issue multiple times with no action. Now, residents are appealing directly to Deputy Commissioner Saloni Rai, urging her to direct the electricity department to immediately fence off all exposed transformers and correct their fuse heights-before the monsoon turns negligence into disaster. With the rainy season already here and hundreds walking past these unsafe installations daily, citizens demand immediate action. Udhampur must act now-before it's too late. |
