'No Work' protest by Municipal Sanitary Workers enters day 9 | | | ashwani sharma Early Times Report UDHAMPUR, July 9: As pilgrims from across the country are moving towards Kashmir Himalayas to perform the pilgrimage of Amarnath, they encounter foul and intolerable smell while their vehicles pass through the Udhampur district in Muncipal limits which is presently facing 'no work protest' by the casual sanitary workers of the municipality which has left big heaps of garbage and other litter on roads and streets. As the protest has entered day 9 concern of public health in this rainy season has caught the concerned health and other departments by surprise especially as the rainy season is there and there is very possibility of outbreak of some waterborne or other disease. "Just few years back we were hit by the deadly Coronavirus and now we are facing the sanitary conditions in our town due to the strike of sanitary workers of municipality," a B.Sc final year student of Degree College Udhampur said. Locals of the town said that the authorities concerned should consider the genuine demands of protesters so that the town may heave a sigh of relief. "We are the tax payers. We should not suffer due to the wrong policies of the government. The authorities should have some alternate in place to meet the situation," a retired Army Colonel, said. Sources informed that the protesting sanitary workers were demanding regularization of services of their daily wagers, timely salary disbursement , increases pay and job security. Presently the scenario in Udhampur town is very ugly with clogged drainage system, litter everywhere on the roads and the bad smell disturbing every pedestrian and other while flies have also increased. "The sanitation workers are the backbone of civic health. Ignoring their rights and grievances not only demoralizes them but also endangers public health," said a student Several social and other organizations have supported the demands of the protesters and have urged the administration to intervene immediately before the crisis goes out of control. |
