KVK Reasi imparts Training on Lemon Grass Farming

Jammu, July 9: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the administrative control of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu (SKUAST-J) organised training programme on “Entrepreneurship development in lemon grass farming” here today at Bhaga village in Reasi distt. of J&K which was actively attended by number of farmers of the area. The programme was organised under the dynamic stewardship of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof.BN Tripathi and able guidance of Director Extension, Prof. Amrish Vaid of SKUAST-Jammu. Chief Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal started the programme with warm welcome of the participants.He said that some belts of Reasi distt. are severely affected by the monkeys menace and there is dire need to find viable crops in the area.
He further said that there is an immense potential of lemongrass farming in the district and farmers can fetch more returns by growing this crop of commercial level. He added that there is need to minimize the effect of monkey menace in these area and for that purpose KVK is technically guiding the farmers and encouraging them for its cultivation and post-harvesting processing techniques. He informed to the trainees that lemongrass is an alternative crop in the monkey prone areas and this crop is not effected by the monkeys. He spoke on the advanced techniques in lemongrass farming and elaborated its cultivation and varietal identification practices. He informed that once the lemon grass crop is planted in the field it remains for more than five years in the field and under normal conditions, three harvests are feasible during the first year, and 3-4 in subsequent years.He stressed on the on the proper management practices to generate more income from this crop.
He expressed that this crop can be grown by the farmers in their fallow/waste land can generate more farm income and self-employment. He further said that lemon grass possesses number of medicinal uses such as carminative and insect repellent, perfumes, cosmetics, herbal teas and non-alcoholic beverages. He narrated that lemon grass oil has strong lemon-like fragrance, due to high percentage of citral in its oil and by selling this oil farmers can enhance their income and employment. He emphasised on the cluster based approach in its cultivation and urged farmers to grow it collectively. He also discussed on the marketing management practices in lemongrass farming and expressed that through its value addition farmers can fetch more farm returns. He added that if grown commercially, lemongrass can prove as a boon to the farmers. During the programme the participants asked certain quarries which were answered satisfactorily by the scientist.During the programme,two awardee women farmers Smt.Anita Kumari and Smt. Sunita Devi who thanked KVK Reasi for organising such a useful programme. The programme was concluded by Sh. Manohar Lal with formal vote of thanks.
