| Protests, clashes continue across valley | | 21 injured in pitched battles at Srinagar, Baramulla | | Early Times report Srinagar, Apr 29- At least twenty one people were injured in anti-poll protests and clashes as valley observed a complete shutdown in response to the 50-hour strike call given by Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani against the elections in the state. Reports said that despite stringent security measures and undeclared curfew, hundreds of people took to streets at Srinagar, Baramulla and Bandipore and staged pro-freedom anti-election demonstrations. Srinagar particularly the old city, witnessed violent clashes between protestors and the paramilitary CRPF and police for the second consecutive day. According to reports early Wednesday morning groups of youth took to streets at Batmaloo and Natipora and staged anti-election demonstrations. Besides raising pro-Kashmir and anti-India slogans, the protesters pelted stones at police and CRPF troops, triggering clashes that continued for some time. Later, police resorted to cane charge besides firing tear smoke shells to disperse the protesting people. At least six people sustained minor injuries in the ding-dong battles. In Maisuma, dozens of people mainly youth took to streets and held protests. The youth pelted stones on the paramilitary CRPF and police triggering ding-dong clashes that continued for more than an hour. Later, additional troops were deployed to foil the attempts of people staging anti-election demonstrations. Reports from North Kashmir said at least fifteen people suffered injuries in violent clashes that erupted in twin towns of Baramulla and Sopore on Wednesday morning against the conduct of elections. Reports of protests and clashes were also received from North Kashmir’s Sopore where hundreds of people took out pro-freedom, anti-election demonstrations this morning. Hundreds of people including small children from Kushal Matoo, Batpora, Janwara, Jamia Masjid, and adjoining areas assembled at main chowk, Sopore and staged pro-freedom, anti poll demonstrations. As the protesters tried to march through the streets of the town, troops and police swung into action and fired numerous smoke shells after they failed to quell the protesters with cane charge. At least seven protesters were injured in the clashes that continued till late Wednesday afternoon. Reports of protests and clashes were also received from Bandipore where people held anti-election demonstrations
