SMVDNSH Katra achieves milestone with first neuro-navigation guided brain tumor surgery
7/15/2025 6:33:10 PM

early times report

Jammu, July 15: The Neurosurgery team at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital (SMVDNSH), Katra, has achieved a major milestone by successfully performing a brain tumor surgery on a 60-year-old patient using an advanced neuro-navigation system. This marks the first time such technology has been used for brain surgery in the Jammu region, representing a significant leap forward in the availability of high-end neurosurgical care in the region.
The surgery was led by Dr. Khushwant Singh, Consultant, Neurosurgery, under the expert guidance and mentorship of Dr. J.P. Singh, Head of the Department and Senior neurosurgeon with decades of experience. The surgical team also included staff nurse Sunil and Aditya, with anesthesia support provided by Dr. Sumit Biloria, Consultant Neuro-Anesthesia.
According to Dr. Khushwant Singh, the patient had been diagnosed with a deeply located, high-grade brain tumor. “The tumor was in a challenging location, but with the assistance of the neuro-navigation system, we were able to precisely locate and decompress the mass with minimal disruption to surrounding brain tissue. The patient is now fully conscious, recovering well, and has shown no new neurological deficits postoperatively,” he said.
Neuro-navigation is a sophisticated image-guidance system that enables surgeons to operate with high accuracy, especially in cases involving deep-seated or critically located brain tumors. Dr. Singh explained, “This technology reduces the need for large craniotomies and avoids unnecessary damage to healthy brain tissue. It makes the procedure significantly safer and less invasive, while allowing continuous intraoperative monitoring for better outcomes.”
He further emphasized the broader impact of this advancement: “Until now, patients from the Jammu region had to travel to Chandigarh or Delhi for such complex surgeries. With this successful procedure, we have proven that these cutting-edge interventions can now be performed safely and effectively at SMVDNSH Katra itself. This not only brings quality care closer to home but also saves patients considerable time, cost, and stress.”
This achievement reinforces SMVDNSH Katra’s position as a leading center for advanced neurosurgical care in the region and reflects the hospital’s commitment to adopting innovative technologies for better patient outcomes.
