CM Yogi's Gram-Urja model to transform rural Uttar Pradesh into self-reliant, energy-rich villages

Early Times Report
LUCKNOW, July 15: The face of rural Uttar Pradesh is set to undergo a major transformation under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's visionary Gram-Urja model. This innovative scheme aims to make villages self-reliant in energy and promote sustainable agriculture, drastically reducing the use of domestic LPG while generating organic/natural fertilizer locally.
Dr. Anurag Srivastava, OSD of the Uttar Pradesh Gauseva Commission, stated that domestic biogas units installed at the village level will reduce kitchen LPG consumption by nearly 70%. This will not only lower household expenses, but also support environmental conservation.
Unlike earlier models limited to cow shelters, the Yogi government plans to extend this initiative directly to farmers' homes and fields. Biogas units will be installed near individual households or farms, enabling farmers to produce both cooking gas and organic fertilizer for personal use. This will significantly cut farming costs and improve productivity.
To ensure broader implementation, the scheme is being integrated with MGNREGA. Rural households will benefit from the construction of personal cattle sheds, and the dung generated will be used in biogas units to produce kitchen fuel. Additionally, farmers can sell the leftover slurry as organic fertilizer to nearby cultivators, creating a new income stream and enhancing self-sufficiency in gas and manure.
The government also plans to establish biogas and organic fertilizer plants in 43 selected cow shelters. Each shelter is expected to produce up to 50 quintals of slurry per month, which will be a valuable resource for nearby farmers engaged in organic farming.
This initiative not only advances environmental sustainability, but also opens up employment avenues for rural youth. Locals will be engaged in the operation, maintenance, fertilizer distribution, and technical support of the biogas plants, generating a new ecosystem of rural employment.
